5 Points to Learn About Contrast Media

Why need to use Contrast Medium?

1

Contrast media, often known as contrast agents or dye, are chemical compounds used in medical X-ray, MRI, computed tomography (CT), angiography, and rarely ultrasound imaging. They can obtain high-quality imaging results while processing X-ray scanning, MRI scanning.

Contrast agent can increase and improve the quality of images (or pictures). So that radiologists can describe how your body is functioning and whether there are any diseases or abnormalities more correctly.

Common Contrast Media Types:

2

By means of delivering: contrast agent can be applied via oral drinking or via IV injection;

Oral contrast media is generally used for visualization of the abdomen and/or pelvis when there is suspicion of bowel pathology.

IV contrast media is used to visualize vasculature as well as the internal organs of the body.

By composition: iodinated contrast media is used for CTA and gadolinium-based contrast media is used for MRA

When to use Contrast Agent?

A sort of contrast CT scan called a CT angiography, or CTA, is used to assess the blood arteries.

The following circumstance necessitates CTA investigations and their recommendations:

Abdominal Aorta (CTA Abdomen);

Pulmonary Arteries (CTA Chest) ;

Thoracic Aorta (CTA Chest and Abdomen with Runoff);

Lower Extremities (CTA Abdomen and Runoff);

Carotid (CTA Neck);

Brain (CTA Head);

3

A variety of arterial problems, including aneurysms, plaques, arteriovenous malformations, emboli, arterial constriction, and other anatomic abnormalities, can be found using MR angiography, or called MRA.

MRA is routinely ordered by doctors in advance of additional examinations or operations to assess the blood flow to a particular body region, such as: Mapping arteries before to arterial bypass, reconstructive surgery, or stent implantation.

Determine the degree of vascular damage following trauma.

Ensure the blood flow to the tumor before chemoembolization or surgery to remove it.

Analyze the blood supply before an organ transplant.

Precautions When Using the Contrast Media:

Late adverse reactions to intravascular iodinated contrast medium can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, itching, skin rashes, musculoskeletal pain, and fever.

Apply contrast media injection with caution in the following four scenarios.

Pregnancy

While IV dye has not been proven to have harmful effects on the fetus, it does pass to the placenta. The American Academy of Radiology advises against using IV contrast unless it is absolutely necessary for the patient's treatment.

Kidney failure

Acute renal failure can result from contrast. Patients with chronic renal disease, diabetes, heart failure, and anemia are at much higher risk. These dangers can be reduced by hydration. Before ordering CT scans with IV dye to check for baseline renal insufficiency, measure your serum creatinine. Withholding IV dye may be necessary in patients with increased creatinine levels. Most medical facilities have policies that specify when patients with reduced renal function may receive IV dye.

Allergic Response

Patients should be questioned about any prior CT contrast allergies before to the introduction of contrast. Antihistamines or steroids may be used beforehand to patients who have a minor allergy. Contrast should not be administered to patients having a history of anaphylactic response.

Contrast Medium Extravasation

Contrast agent extravasation, also known as iodine extravasation or iodine extravasation, is a common consequence of enhanced CT scanning where contrast agent enters non-vascular tissue such as perivascular space, subcutaneous tissue, intradermal tissue, etc. Due to the fact that high-pressure injection devices may deliver huge quantities of contrast in a short amount of time, this issue is both increasingly prevalent and dangerous as they become more widely used in clinics. The region grows once extravasated.
